How often should I have a comprehensive eye examination?

It is recommended to make comprehensive eye examinations part of your overall routine healthcare in order to ensure any issues are caught and treated early! We recommend having a comprehensive eye examination at least once a year, unless you have underlying medical conditions or ocular conditions that require further treatment or follow up.

What is the difference between vision and medical insurance?

Eyecare is somewhat unique in the medical field as there are two different types of insurance coverage that can help to cover the costs of eye examinations. Vision insurances, such as VSP and Eyemed, will cover routine examination of the eyes and visual system in order to determine a glasses or contact lens prescription. Medical insurance can be used for the diagnosis and management of disease. If you are wanting, for example, a routine yearly eye exam, often your vision plan is what will be used, however, if you have symptoms of blurred vision, dry eye, or other ocular conditions and wish to be seen, you may be able to use your medical insurance for your visit. Please contact our office for more specific recommendations.

I have 20/20 vision, do I still need an eye exam?

Assessing visual acuity (your ability to read the eye chart) is only one small part of an overall comprehensive eye examination. Many ocular conditions, such as glaucoma, retinal tears, diabetic eye disease and many more can be present while still having 20/20 vision! As part of overall health maintenance it is recommended to have a comprehensive eye examination once yearly.
